Outline
In 508 BC - it was 16 years before this date that the Persian emperor Cyrus issued a decree permitting the return of nearly 50,000 Jewish exiles in Babylon to return to Jerusalem for the purpose of rebuilding their temple. The newly appointed governor of Judah was Zerubbabel and the high priest was Joshua.
Daily sacrifices began once the temple court was cleared of rubble and the altar of burnt offerings was replaced on its base. Yet the enemies of the Jews resisted and hindered the rebuild, and the work ceased.
Haggai challenged the people to rebuild - to realign their priorities. To live for God and not themselves
